Mòbiàn fāwēi 墨辯發微

(‘Elucidating the Subtle Meaning of the Mòbiàn’), Tán Jièfǔ’s mature study of Mohist dialectics, pblished in 1957. Combining textual criticism, intellectual history, and comparative logic, the work seeks to recover Mòbiàn as a distinct discipline and to reconstruct its historical development within the Mohist tradition. Tán argues that the six dialectical chapters of the Mòzǐ preserve a coherent tradition of reasoning whose significance has been obscured by later classifications of the Mohists, the School of Names, and the xíng-míng thinkers. The book is one of the most ambitious twentieth-century attempts to recover the intellectual identity of Mohist dialectics.
