Tiānzhì 天志

‘Will of Heaven’: a triad of chapters of the Mòzǐ concerned with the problem of standards. Heaven’s will is presented as an external measure, analogous to the compass and square, by which competing doctrines and policies can be judged. The Tiānzhì chapters integrate many other Mohist teachings and are best understood not simply as theology but as a theory of normative authority.
