Mòzǐ jiāngǔ 墨子閒詁
(‘Interlinear Explanations of the Mòzǐ’), Sūn Yíràng’s monumental commentary on the Mòzǐ, completed in 1894. Building on the text transmitted through Bì Yuán while drawing together an extensive body of earlier scholarship, Sūn combined philology, textual criticism, and historical analysis in the first comprehensive modern study of the work. Rather than simply proposing new readings, he systematically reported, assessed, and synthesised the interpretations of earlier scholars, creating a critical foundation for subsequent research. Nearly all twentieth-century studies of the Mòjīng, from Liáng Qǐchāo and Hú Shì to Shěn Yǒudǐng and Angus Charles Graham (Gélāihàn), begin from the textual framework established by Mòzǐ jiāngǔ.
